Smolen, Susan “Sue,” 104, originally of Central City, died peacefully in her sleep on May 2, 2025 at Laurel View Village, Davidsville, PA. Born September 9, 1920, the daughter of John and Anna (Stefaniv) Smolen. Preceded in death by parents and these siblings: Anna (Charles) Hrapchak, Mary (Mike) Pribish, John (Helen), Dr. George (Peggy), Andrew and Helen (George) Hegedus. Survived by sister Margaret (Edward) Kawala, IL. Also survived by thirteen nieces, nephews, and numerous great nieces and great nephews.
Sue graduated from Shade High School in 1939. She worked for RCA in New Jersey. She enjoyed her work and friends in NYC until she returned home to care for her parents in their later years. Sue worked as a cashier at multiple markets in Central City and Windber. She was an avid baker, cook and gardener who hosted many family gatherings and holidays at her Indian Lake home. Many knew her as the best baker of nut rolls ever. Aunt Sue was an independent woman and a strong role model, an inspiration to her nieces and nephews, as well as so many who knew her. She was selfless in her caring of others, but quick to share her wit and opinion. Sue was a lifelong, active member of SS Peter & Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, Central City. Her strong faith guided her through many difficult periods in her life, but brought her much joy. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Friends will be received 10-11 am Saturday at the Mulcahy Funeral Home. Funeral Service will follow at 11:30 am at SS Peter & Paul’s Orthodox Church, Central City with the Very Reverend Protopresbyter Robert Buczak and Protodeacon Oleg Aminov serving. Committal Parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make donations to The Laurel View Caring Fund, SS Peter & Paul Orthodox Church or Windber Hospice, in Sue’s memory.
