Matey, Paul R., 92, New Paris, who resided at St. Leonards Home, died January 4, 2020 at UPMC Altoona. Born June 20, 1927 in Central City, the son of Andrew and Mary (Gmitter) Matey. Preceded in death by parents; his beloved wife, Arlene who he met while stationed in Colorado; brothers, John, Andrew, Joseph, George and Steve; and sister, Anna. Paul was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Elsie, widow of Steve. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews along with numerous great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews. A 1944 graduate of Shade High School, a U.S. Army veteran of WWII serving in Germany and continued service by enlisting in the Air Force (1949 to 1952). Paul retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Denver, CO after a 30 year career. He and Arlene continued to live in CO until 1996 when they moved to Alum Bank. Paul and his wife enjoyed traveling. He visited Germany, Slovakia and Austria. He enjoyed spending time with and spoiling his cats, Jack and Jill. Paul was a member of the Bedford American Legion.
