Bill Balya Obituary

Bill Balya “Pelican” flew home on Friday, June 5, 2026, 3 weeks short of his 99th birthday. Born June 24, 1927 in Central City, PA to Michael and Margaret (Antol) Balya. Preceded in death by parents, brothers Michael, Daniel, and sister Mary Ann Naret.

Married to the former Lucille Oravec for 59 years until her death in 2009. Survived by daughter Debbie Lou Nelson and husband Skip of Somerset, granddaughters Julie (Jeff) Frantz of Erie and Patti Jo (Jon) Opfar of Somerset, and three great-grandsons, Carter and Nathan Frantz and Henry Opfar. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

He was the last living member of his immediate family and a US Navy veteran of WWII.

Bill lived a self-made life. As a child he began repairing bicycles which later led to lawn mowers and small engine repair. When not working he provided food for his family by fishing which led to a life-long favorite hobby and his nickname “Pelican”. If you had the pleasure of going on a fishing trip with Pelican and you caught a bigger fish or more fish then he did, you usually were not invited on any future fishing trips.

Bill was co-founder and co-owner, with his son-in-law Skip, of B & N Enterprises in Central City. He thrived on fixing things no one else could fix. Often making his own part to fix equipment.

Bill was a member of the Johnstown Masonic Lodge and Altoona Jaffa Shrine. He was also a member of the Bedford American Legion, Central City and Schellsburg VFWs, Central City Sportsman's Club and the New Baltimore Sportsman’s Club.

At Bill’s request there will be no viewing or visitation. A private committal was held at Schellsburg Old Log Church Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Central City Sportsman’s Club for the kids fishing rodeos at PO Box 152 Cairnbrook, PA 15924.
